My Trips to the Hospital

About Me

My Trips to the Hospital

Hi, I'm Cari. When I was a teenager, my best friend Claire's mom got cancer. I started offering to take Deb (the mom) to the hospital for her treatments to help give the family a break. They had all been in and out of the hospital so much, and since I'm basically family to them, it was nice to support Deb and Claire. Not to mention, I was able to learn a lot about different medical topics just be listening and watching while waiting in the hospital. It was fascinating. To everyone's joy, after a long and hard two years, Deb finally beat cancer! I decided to start this blog as a memorial to all those who have struggled with health problems and as a resource to for anyone who needs to know more about hospitals and treatments.

2 Reasons To Take Your Child In For Language Development Services At A Young Age

If you notice that your child has a speech issue, it is a good idea to take them into a speech and language therapist as soon as you notice it. This allows them to be assessed to see what the next step should be in terms of their treatment. This article will discuss 2 reasons why you should take your child in for language development services at a young age.

Early Intervention Is Key

When it comes to an issue with your child's speech and language development, the quicker the problem can be assessed and worked on, the better. The language therapist will begin working with your child right away to fix the sound or sounds that they are struggling with, and will help them to move forward with their speech development. However, if the issue is left unfixed, this may cause your child's speech and language issue to become even worse. For example, rather than just having issues with a couple of sounds, these issues may turn into having issues saying several different words that include these sounds. This may cause them to be made fun of, which in turn may make them feel as if they don't want to speak to others. This can turn into a social issue that wouldn't have developed if the child had been able to have early intervention with their speech issues.

The Speech Therapist Will Gear Their Treatment Methods Specifically For Your Child

Different children are going to respond better or worse to different kinds of therapy. Because speech therapists realize this, they are going to try multiple treatment methods to see which ones work the best for your child. For example, one child may benefit the most from having the speech therapist use props and games to improve their speech, while another may benefit from having the therapist first show them how to shape their mouth, then help them to do so using their hands and different speech tools. Another child may make the most improvements when they are working with a group of children, either in a structured setting where they are all learning how to move their mouth for different sounds, or in an unstructured setting where they are speaking freely on their own, such as playing with toys, board games, etc. A combination of these things may also work well for your child. An any case, the speech therapist is going to watch your child, work with them, and see what is best for their individualized treatment plan.
